Taiwan to fund e-book industry

The Taiwan government will provide NT$1.2 billion ($36.9 million) in funding over a five-year period to promote the development of the island's e-book industry.

The e-paper display market will grow to 1.8 billion units and $9.6 billion in revenues in 2018, from 22 million units and $431 million in revenues in 2009, according to U.S. market research firm DisplaySearch.

Taiwan's Prime View International is the world's highest volume supplier of e-paper display modules, which it supplies to Amazon and other e-book vendors. In the third quarter this year, Prime View had the strongest sales increase of Taiwan's six flat-panel display makers, with revenue soaring by 61 percent.

Taiwanese electronics companies such as AU Optronics and Delta Electronics control key technologies for e-paper.

AU Optronics, the world's third largest maker of flat-panel displays, took a 31.6 percent stake in e-paper maker SiPix Imaging Inc. in March for $30 million. AU Optronics has been shipping 6- and 9-inch e-book displays since August.

Another Taiwanese flat-panel display maker, Chi Mei Optoelectronics, signed a memorandum of understanding with Prime View on Oct. 1 to supply e-reader displays to the company.
